Norwood Road and the town centre
Norwood Road is the main street. It runs north from St Luke's Church to Tulse Hill and carries the A215. Shops, cafes, banks and takeaways line both sides, and buses run its length every few minutes.
Because of the bus lanes, stopping on Norwood Road is limited. Drivers pick up from side roads such as Lansdowne Hill, Chatsworth Way, York Hill and Waylett Place. When you book, tell us which shop or junction you are near.
At the southern end the road splits at the church. Knights Hill climbs south west towards Streatham Common and Crown Point. Norwood High Street bears south east towards Gipsy Hill.
Knights Hill, Norwood High Street and the leisure centre
Knights Hill has a large supermarket, the bus garage and the West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre, which combines a pool and gym with GP surgeries and clinics. It is one of the busiest destinations in SE27.
Norwood High Street, despite the name, is quieter. It has workshops, studios and the South London Theatre in the old fire station. The library and cinema building is on Norwood High Street by the cemetery gates.
For a film or a play, book your ride home in advance. Performances finish after buses have thinned out, and the walk up the hills is long.
West Norwood and Tulse Hill stations
West Norwood station is on Knights Hill, right in the town centre. Southern trains go to Victoria and London Bridge. The entrance is on the bridge, and drivers wait just off the main road on Cotswold Street.
Tulse Hill station is a mile north. It has Thameslink trains to Blackfriars and St Pancras as well as Southern services, which makes it useful for the City. It sits on the South Circular at a busy junction. Pickups work best on Station Rise.
Gipsy Hill station, to the south east, is closer for some SE27 addresses. Tell us which you are using.
Hills in every direction
West Norwood lies in a valley. To the east, Gipsy Hill and Salters Hill climb towards Crystal Palace. To the south, Knights Hill and Beulah Hill rise to the ridge. To the west, Leigham Court Road goes up to Streatham Hill.
That geography shapes how people use cabs here. Many of our SE27 trips are a few minutes long. A lift from the station up to a house on Canterbury Grove or Lancaster Avenue. A ride home from the supermarket to the flats on the Portobello estate. The distance is short, and the gradient is the reason.
Typical drive times from St Luke's Church
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Tulse Hill station | 4 to 7 minutes |
| Crystal Palace Triangle | 8 to 12 minutes |
| Brixton | 12 to 18 minutes |
| Streatham High Road | 8 to 12 minutes |
| King's College Hospital | 15 to 22 minutes |
| Sydenham station | 12 to 18 minutes |
These are typical times in ordinary traffic. Norwood Road is slow in the morning and evening peaks, and on market Sundays.
West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium
West Norwood Cemetery is one of the seven great Victorian cemeteries of London. It is known for its monuments, its Greek section and the many notable people buried there. The entrance is on Norwood Road, by the library.
We bring families to funerals and memorial services at the crematorium, and visitors for the guided tours. Ask for a wait and return if you would like the driver to stay. For a funeral party, tell us how many people are travelling, and we will keep the family in as few vehicles as possible.
Feast and the community calendar
On the first Sunday of most months, West Norwood Feast fills the town centre with street food, crafts and music across several sites. It is very popular, and some roads close for the day.
On Feast days, tell us where you want dropping, and the driver will get as near as the closures permit. Book the return, since thousands of people leave at around the same time.
Health and hospital journeys
The health centre on Knights Hill handles many local appointments. For hospital care, most SE27 residents attend King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill or St Thomas' Hospital near Waterloo. St George's Hospital in Tooting is the other common referral.
Tell us the hospital and the department. We will suggest a pickup time that allows for traffic through Herne Hill or Brixton. Wheelchair accessible vehicles can be sent on request.
Norwood Park and the open spaces
Norwood Park, off Salters Hill, has a playground, a water play area in summer and long views north to the City. Tivoli Park and the green at Knights Hill are smaller local spots. Streatham Common and the Rookery gardens are a short drive south west.
Families without a car use us to reach these on warm days. The driver drops at the gate and returns at the time you choose.
Workshops, studios and local businesses
West Norwood has a working side that visitors rarely see. The estates off Norwood High Street and Knights Hill house furniture makers, printers, caterers, breweries and film prop stores.
We take staff and clients to these addresses and collect parcels and samples for delivery across London. Businesses can open an account and pay weekly.
Schools in SE27
West Norwood has several secondary schools, including The Elmgreen School on Elmcourt Road and the Norwood School on Crown Dale, and many primaries. Families also send children to schools in Dulwich, Streatham and Crystal Palace.
For a car at the same time each morning, see our school run taxi page. It covers standing bookings, child seats and school holidays.
Evenings out
West Norwood has good pubs and restaurants of its own. Brixton is 15 minutes north for music and nightlife, and Crystal Palace Triangle is ten minutes up the hill. Streatham and Herne Hill are close too.
Call 020 8778 8888 to book your journey home. We are open all night. Private hire cars must be booked through the office, so save the number before you go out. Groups can share a 7 seater taxi.
Travelling further from West Norwood
SE27 is close to the South Circular at Tulse Hill, which helps with trips west. The journey on our Sydenham to Heathrow Airport taxi page is around ten minutes shorter from here. For flights from the south, see the minicab from Sydenham to Gatwick Airport page.
For trains, the Sydenham to Victoria Station taxi page gives the route through Brixton. For the north west, see the Sydenham to Euston Station taxi page.
