Minicab to King's Cross from Sydenham, door to concourse
Getting to King's Cross by public transport from Sydenham is possible, but it takes planning. Most people ride to London Bridge and change to Thameslink for St Pancras, or take the Overground to Canada Water and work their way round by Tube. With a rucksack, that is fine.
With a week's luggage, a child and a reserved seat on the 9am to Edinburgh, it is another story. Miss one connection and the seat you paid for leaves without you.
A minicab to King's Cross from Sydenham gives you one timed pickup and one drop. You know when you are leaving the house and roughly when you will arrive.
The route across London Road by road
Drivers normally leave Sydenham through Forest Hill and Honor Oak, then follow Peckham Rye and Camberwell to the Elephant and Castle. From there the car crosses Blackfriars Bridge and runs straight up Farringdon Road and King's Cross Road to the station.
It is about 9 miles. On paper that is short. In practice it passes through some of the busiest junctions in London.
Typical journey time to King's Cross
The typical journey time is 45 to 70 minutes. Before 6.30am and after 8pm it is often nearer 40. During the weekday morning peak, Camberwell Green and the Elephant can each hold you for ten minutes.
How much time to allow for your train
We suggest being dropped at least 25 minutes before your train leaves. Long distance platforms at King's Cross are announced about 20 minutes ahead, and the walk from the kerb to the far platforms takes a few minutes with bags.
Where your driver can set you down
King's Cross has a busy front on Euston Road, where stopping is restricted. Private hire drivers usually set down on Pancras Road, on the west side of the station, or near York Way on the east side. Both are a short level walk from the concourse.
If you are using the Underground, tell the driver. There is a Tube entrance on Pancras Road that saves you walking through the main station.
King's Cross and St Pancras are neighbours
St Pancras International is directly across Pancras Road from King's Cross. They share an Underground station, and people often mix up the two when booking.
King's Cross handles LNER, Great Northern, Hull Trains, Lumo and Grand Central services. St Pancras handles Eurostar, East Midlands Railway, Southeastern high speed trains to Kent and Thameslink.
Tell us which station your train leaves from. For Eurostar you need to be there much earlier, usually 60 to 90 minutes before departure, so we plan the pickup differently.
Taxi from King's Cross to SE26
Coming home is where a booked car earns its keep. After four hours on a train from Scotland, another hour of changes across London is hard to face.
Book your return when you book the outward trip. Give us the train's arrival time and where it is coming from. Your driver will be nearby when you arrive and will phone or text to agree the meeting point, usually on Pancras Road.
Trains run late sometimes. If yours is delayed, ring the office on 020 8778 8888 from your seat and we will move the pickup time.
Late trains and early starts
The last trains from the north reach King's Cross close to midnight and sometimes after. Rail connections back to Sydenham thin out at that hour, and the night bus takes a long time.
Our office runs 24 hours, so a car at 12.30am is as normal for us as one at midday. The same goes for the first departures. A 5.15am pickup from Wells Park Road or Lawrie Park Gardens is routine.
Which car to book
Most station trips need a saloon, which takes up to four passengers with two large cases. If each of you has a big bag, book an estate.
Families of five or six should look at the 6 seater taxi. Groups heading to a match or a wedding up north can share a 7 seater taxi or an 8 seater minibus. Child seats are available on request.
Congestion Charge and what your quote covers
The usual route passes through the central London Congestion Charge zone, which operates during the day and at weekends. King's Cross itself lies just outside the zone on its northern edge.
When we quote, ask whether the charge is included for your time of travel. We would rather you knew the full figure before the car arrives.
Other London stations and airports from Sydenham
King's Cross is one of seven terminals we drive to every day. Euston is half a mile west along the same road, so see our Sydenham to Euston Station taxi page if your train goes from there. For trains to the west, use the Sydenham to Paddington Station taxi page.
Flying and not sure a train to the airport is worth it? A Luton Airport taxi from Sydenham skips the Thameslink leg from St Pancras entirely. And if you live just north of us, our Forest Hill taxi page covers pickups in SE23.
Places around King's Cross that people ask for
Not every booking ends at the ticket barriers. The area behind the station has changed a great deal, and we often take customers to addresses there.
- Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, for shops and restaurants by the canal
- Central Saint Martins, for students moving in with boxes and portfolios
- The British Library on Euston Road
- The Francis Crick Institute and the offices on Pancras Square
Give us the exact address and the driver will stop as close as the road layout allows. Parts of the estate are closed to through traffic, so a short walk may still be needed.
Travelling with children or older relatives
Long train journeys with small children or an elderly parent go better when the first hour is calm. A car from the house means no platform changes and no standing.
If someone in your party uses a wheelchair or walks slowly, tell us when you book. We can send a suitable vehicle on request, and the driver can stop at the entrance with the shortest level route. Train companies also offer passenger assistance at King's Cross when it is arranged in advance.
How to book
Call 020 8778 8888 or use the booking form at the top of the page. Enter your pickup postcode and King's Cross Station, choose a time and you will see the fare. Payment is by card or cash.
It helps to have a few details ready. We will ask for the time your train leaves, how many of you are travelling, how many large bags you have and a mobile number for the driver. If you want the return booked as well, have the arrival time to hand.
