Why a cab beats the rail connections from SE26
Ask anyone in Sydenham how they get to Euston and you will hear three different answers. Some go to London Bridge and take the Northern line. Others ride the Overground to Highbury and Islington and come back down on the Victoria line. A few go via Victoria.
Each way means at least one change with stairs or escalators. Each way adds a wait you cannot predict. That is manageable for a commuter and tiring for a traveller with luggage.
A minicab from Sydenham to Euston replaces all of it. The driver collects you from your door and stops near the station entrance.
Who travels from Euston
It helps to know what leaves from here, because it changes how early you need to arrive.
Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern
Avanti runs the fast trains to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales and Glasgow. London Northwestern runs the slower services to Milton Keynes, Northampton and Crewe. Platforms are announced late and the concourse fills up quickly, so aim to be inside 20 to 25 minutes before departure.
The Caledonian Sleeper
The Caledonian Sleeper leaves Euston late in the evening for Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William. Boarding opens well ahead of departure. An evening taxi from Sydenham, after the rush has died down, is a relaxed way to begin. Coming back, the sleeper arrives early in the morning, and we can have a car ready to bring you home.
The road from Sydenham to Euston
The usual route runs through Forest Hill to Peckham and Camberwell, on to the Elephant and Castle, then up to Waterloo Bridge. Once across the Thames the car follows Kingsway, Southampton Row and Woburn Place, coming out on Euston Road beside the station.
Some drivers prefer Blackfriars Bridge and Farringdon Road when the Aldwych is clogged. They check before they reach the river.
Typical time and distance
The distance is roughly 9 miles. The typical journey time is 45 to 70 minutes. Midday and late evening are usually the easiest times, while 8am on a weekday is the slowest.
A sensible buffer
Be at the station half an hour before a long distance train. For a first class or assisted travel booking, give yourself 40 minutes. We can work back from your train time and suggest a pickup time when you call.
Setting down at Euston
Euston has been surrounded by building work for several years, and the access roads change from time to time. Drivers usually stop on Melton Street on the west side or Eversholt Street on the east side. From either, the walk to the concourse is short and step free.
If you have reduced mobility, mention it when you book. The driver will pick the side with the easiest access on the day, and station staff can meet you if you have arranged assistance with your train company.
Cab from Euston to Sydenham
When you return to London, a cab from Euston to Sydenham saves the cross town trek. Book it with your outward journey and give us the arrival time of your train.
The driver will contact you as the train pulls in and agree a meeting point. If your train is late, phone 020 8778 8888 and we will adjust the booking.
Private hire cars cannot be flagged down on the street, so a car must be booked ahead. That is a London rule and it protects you, since every booked trip is recorded by a licensed operator.
Near Euston and worth knowing
Plenty of people book this journey for reasons other than a train.
- University College Hospital is a short walk west on Euston Road
- The British Library is five minutes to the east
- University College London sits just to the south
- The Wellcome Collection is across the road from the station
If your real destination is one of these, give us the exact address. We will drop you at the right door, and you skip the walk from the station.
Students, football and other regular Euston runs
A few kinds of trip come up on this route time after time.
At the start and end of university terms, we take students and their parents to trains for Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster and Birmingham. Boxes, bedding and a bicycle wheel are all normal. Ask for an estate or an MPV and tell us roughly how much there is.
On match days, supporters heading for away games in the north west book early cars to catch the cheaper morning trains. A group of five or six can share one vehicle and split the fare.
Business travellers form the third group. A day return to Birmingham or Manchester often means a 6.30am train. We collect at around 5.15am, when the roads are empty, and the return car is waiting that evening.
Cars, luggage and child seats
A saloon carries up to four passengers with two large cases. An estate adds boot space for a family's worth of bags. For five or more people, look at our 6 seater taxi page.
Travelling with a dog on the train? Our pet friendly taxi page explains how to book a car that welcomes animals. Child seats are available on request, so tell us the age of your child.
Fares, charges and paying
We give you a price before you book. Your route crosses the central Congestion Charge zone, which applies in the daytime and at weekends. Ask us whether it is included in the figure we quote for your travel time.
You can pay by card or cash. Businesses that send staff to Euston often can open an account with weekly invoicing.
What to tell us on the phone
Good information makes for a better pickup. When you call, we will ask for your train time, your pickup address, the number of passengers and the amount of luggage. A mobile number is important too, since the driver may need to reach you outside a busy station.
If you live on one of the steeper roads off Kirkdale or Sydenham Hill, or your house is set back from the street, mention it. The driver will know where to stop and you will not be left watching the wrong corner.
