A neighbourhood built around a green
Bellingham is mostly a single planned estate, laid out in the 1920s with cottage style houses on curving, tree lined roads. At the centre is Bellingham Green, with streets fanning out from it like spokes.
It is a pleasant layout to live in and a puzzling one to navigate. Roads bend, names sound alike, and a sat nav will often send a stranger round the Green twice. Our drivers work here every day. They know that King Alfred Avenue, Brookehowse Road and Firhill Road each lead somewhere different, and they find the door first time.
Give us the house number and road. If you are near a landmark, such as the Green, the church or the leisure centre, say so.
Randlesdown Road and Bellingham station
Randlesdown Road is the local shopping street. It has convenience stores, takeaways, a chemist and a post office counter, and it leads straight to Bellingham station.
The station is on the Thameslink loop. Trains run north through Catford to Blackfriars and south to Beckenham Hill, Bromley South and Sevenoaks. Services are less frequent than on the main lines, particularly in the evening and on Sundays.
When a train is cancelled or the gap is long, people call us. A car from the station to Catford, Lewisham or home takes minutes. Drivers wait on Randlesdown Road by the station entrance.
Bromley Road and Southend Lane
Two main roads border the area.
Bromley Road is the A21. It runs north to Catford and Lewisham and south through Southend village to Downham and Bromley. Buses are frequent, but the road is slow at peak times, especially at the Southend Lane lights by the pond.
Southend Lane links Bromley Road to Bell Green and Sydenham. It passes under the railway by Lower Sydenham station. Drivers know the bridge and the lights there cause queues around 5pm, and they use Worsley Bridge Road as a way round when it helps.
Shopping at Bell Green and beyond
Bell Green Retail Park is the nearest large shopping area. It has a big supermarket, DIY and homeware stores and several other chains. From most of Bellingham it is five minutes by car.
The walk back with bags is another matter. A short cab home is one of the most common bookings we take from SE6. Tell us you have shopping, and the driver will help you load.
Other regular shopping trips include Catford town centre, Lewisham Shopping Centre and The Glades in Bromley.
Typical drive times from Bellingham Green
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Bell Green Retail Park | 4 to 7 minutes |
| Catford Broadway | 6 to 10 minutes |
| Lewisham Shopping Centre | 12 to 20 minutes |
| Bromley town centre | 12 to 20 minutes |
| Sydenham station | 8 to 12 minutes |
These are typical figures on a normal day. Bromley Road is slower in the morning and evening peaks.
Health and hospital journeys
Residents of Bellingham are usually referred to University Hospital Lewisham, which is straight up the A21. It typically takes 12 to 20 minutes from the Green.
There are GP surgeries on Bromley Road and around the estate, and a health centre at Downham a short drive south. For regular treatment, such as dialysis or physiotherapy, we can set up a repeating booking with the same pickup time each visit.
If you use a wheelchair or a walking frame, tell us. The driver will allow extra time, and an accessible vehicle can be sent on request.
The leisure centre, the cinema and community life
Bellingham Leisure and Lifestyle Centre on Randlesdown Road has a pool, a gym and sports courts. Children's swimming lessons bring a steady flow of bookings in term time.
The Fellowship Inn, a restored 1920s pub near the station, now houses a cinema, a music venue and a cafe. It has become a real draw for the area. If you are coming from outside Bellingham for a film or a gig, book a return for when it ends. Trains are infrequent late in the evening.
Parks and the Pool River
Beckenham Place Park borders Bellingham to the south, with an entrance near Beckenham Hill station. It offers woodland walks, a swimming lake and wide lawns.
The Waterlink Way follows the Pool River from Bellingham north towards Catford and south towards Sydenham. It is popular with walkers and cyclists. If you walk one way and want a lift back, call us from wherever you end up.
Dog walkers should look at our pet friendly taxi page. Tell us about the dog when you book, and we will send a driver who is happy to carry it.
Sport at the playing fields
The fields off Randlesdown Road and Bromley Road are used by local football clubs through the season, and the pitches at Beckenham Place Park draw teams from across the borough. If you are bringing a group of players, tell us how many and whether there are kit bags, and we will send a vehicle that fits everyone.
School runs in Bellingham
The estate has several primary schools, including those on Elfrida Crescent and Athelney Street, and Sedgehill Academy is to the south. Older children travel to schools in Catford, Sydenham and Beckenham.
Parents who need the same car every morning can set up a standing booking. Our school run taxi page explains the details, including child seats and term dates.
Evenings and late night travel
Bellingham itself is quiet at night, so people go out in Catford, Beckenham, Lewisham or central London. Getting back is the hard part, since the last trains to Bellingham are early compared with other lines.
Book a car home on 020 8778 8888. We run all night. Private hire cars must be booked through an office and cannot be hailed on the street, so save our number before you go out.
For a group, a 6 seater taxi keeps the fare per person low.
Travelling further from SE6
The A21 gives Bellingham quick access to Lewisham and the roads towards the river crossings. That is the first leg of the journey on our London City Airport cabs from Sydenham page, and of the longer run north described on the Sydenham to Stansted Airport transfers page.
For rail travellers, our Sydenham to London Bridge Station taxi and Sydenham to Charing Cross Station taxi pages give routes and typical times. Add about five minutes from Bellingham.
Vehicles we send
A saloon suits up to four passengers. An estate has a larger boot. MPVs carry six or seven people, and the 8 seater minibus is for bigger groups. Child seats are available on request.
Neighbouring areas
North along Bromley Road is Catford, covered on our Catford taxi page. South is Beckenham, on the Beckenham taxi page. West, past Bell Green, is Sydenham itself, and then Forest Hill on the Forest Hill taxi page.
All districts are listed on our areas we cover page.

Do I get a price before I travel?
Yes. We quote the fare when you book, by phone or online.
