Dulwich Taxi for the Village, Lordship Lane and SE21

A Dulwich taxi needs a driver who understands the road rules of the Village, and ours do. Dulwich lies just over the ridge from Sydenham, reached by Sydenham Hill and College Road or by the South Circular. It covers SE21 and the East Dulwich streets of SE22. We pick up across both, at any hour, with a price given in advance.

Driving in Dulwich Village and the timed restrictions

Dulwich is not like other parts of London to drive in. Much of the land belongs to the Dulwich Estate, and several roads carry restrictions that catch out visitors.

The junction in the heart of the Village, where Calton Avenue meets Dulwich Village, is closed to through traffic. Other streets have timed restrictions at school hours, enforced by cameras. A driver who follows a sat nav blindly can end up on a long loop.

Our drivers work in SE21 every day. They know which roads are open at which times, and they plan the approach to your address accordingly. If your street is inside a restricted area, we will tell you the nearest point a car can reach.

College Road and the toll gate

College Road runs south from the Village, past Dulwich College, up to Crystal Palace. Partway along is the last working toll gate in London. Cars pay a small charge to pass during the day.

It is the most direct road between Dulwich and Sydenham Hill. When we quote, ask whether the toll is included if your route uses it. The alternative is to go round by the South Circular and Sydenham Hill, which adds a few minutes.

The South Circular at Dulwich Common

Dulwich Common is the local name for the A205 between Lordship Lane and West Dulwich. It carries heavy traffic all day, and the junctions at each end are slow at peak times.

This road is also the main way out of Dulwich for longer trips. It leads west to Tulse Hill, Clapham and Wandsworth. That is the route described on our Sydenham to Heathrow Airport taxi page, and Dulwich customers start a good ten minutes further along it.

Lordship Lane and East Dulwich

Lordship Lane is the high street of East Dulwich. It is lined with restaurants, bars, butchers, bakers, bookshops and a cinema. On Saturdays it is thronged, and in the evenings it is one of the best places to eat in south east London.

Stopping on Lordship Lane is limited, and North Cross Road has a market on Saturdays. Drivers usually collect from a side street such as Frogley Road, Ashbourne Grove or Matham Grove. Tell us where you are, and we will name the spot.

For the ride home at the end of the evening, book ahead. Call 020 8778 8888 when you sit down, and name a time. If you are in a group, a 6 seater taxi is ideal.

Dulwich Picture Gallery, the park and Belair

Dulwich Picture Gallery on Gallery Road is the oldest public art gallery in England, and its exhibitions draw visitors from far beyond the area. Parking nearby is limited.

Across the road is Dulwich Park, with a lake, a cafe and a wide carriage drive. Belair Park, with its Georgian house, is a short way west. All three are common drop off points.

Tell us which gate you want. Dulwich Park has entrances on College Road, Dulwich Common and Court Lane, and they are a fair walk apart.

School runs across Dulwich

Dulwich has one of the highest concentrations of schools in London. Dulwich College, Alleyn's School and James Allen's Girls' School are the well known independents. There are also Dulwich Prep, Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, the Charter schools and many primaries.

Morning traffic is intense. Townley Road, East Dulwich Grove, College Road and Alleyn Park all queue from 8am. Families living in Sydenham, Forest Hill and Crystal Palace often send children over the hill each day.

Our school run taxi page explains how to set up a regular car for the term. We know the drop off arrangements at each school, and which roads are restricted at school times.

Stations in Dulwich

Rail is spread thinly across the area.

  • West Dulwich, on Thurlow Park Road, has trains to Victoria
  • North Dulwich, on Red Post Hill, has trains to London Bridge
  • East Dulwich, on Grove Vale, is on the same London Bridge line
  • Sydenham Hill, off College Road, has trains to Victoria

None of them is close to the Village centre, and Sydenham Hill station sits at the bottom of a long wooded path. A cab from the platform to your door is a regular request, especially in the dark.

Hospital visits from SE21

King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill is the nearest major hospital, typically 8 to 15 minutes from the Village. The Tessa Jowell Health Centre on East Dulwich Grove provides clinics and GP services.

Typical drive times from Dulwich Village

DestinationTypical time
King's College Hospital8 to 15 minutes
Herne Hill5 to 10 minutes
Sydenham station10 to 15 minutes
Brixton12 to 20 minutes
Guy's Hospital, London Bridge20 to 35 minutes

These are typical figures for a normal day. School traffic adds to them between 8am and 9am.

Herne Hill and Brockwell Park

Herne Hill is on the north western edge of Dulwich. It has a Sunday market by the station, the Half Moon and the velodrome on Burbage Road. Brockwell Park and its lido are just beyond. In summer, festivals in the park close some roads, and the driver will set you down at the nearest open point.

Football at Champion Hill

Dulwich Hamlet play at Champion Hill, near East Dulwich station. Match days are friendly and well attended. We drop on Edgar Kail Way or Dog Kennel Hill and collect from the same area after the final whistle.

Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood

The woods along the ridge between Dulwich and Sydenham are the largest surviving piece of the old Great North Wood. Walkers enter from Crescent Wood Road, Cox's Walk or Low Cross Wood Lane.

If you walk through to the other side and want a lift home, call us. Dog owners should read our pet friendly taxi page before booking.
