Why the hill makes a minicab worth it
Stand at the bottom of Anerley Hill with two bags of shopping and you will understand at once. The climb to the Parade is long and sharp. Fox Hill, Gipsy Hill and Central Hill are no kinder.
Buses do run up, but they fill at busy times, and many homes are a good walk from the nearest stop. For older residents, parents with pushchairs and anyone with luggage, a short cab ride is the sensible choice.
So a large share of our Crystal Palace work is local. Station to front door. Supermarket to flat. Restaurant to home on a cold night. These are five to ten minute trips, and we are glad to do them.
Around the Triangle on Westow Hill and Church Road
The Triangle is the heart of Crystal Palace. Three streets, Westow Hill, Westow Street and Church Road, form a one way loop packed with restaurants, pubs, cafes, vintage shops and a cinema.
Because it is one way, the pickup point matters. If the driver has to go round again, that adds a few minutes. When you book, give us the name of the place you are in and which of the three streets it is on. Drivers often stop in a side road such as Haynes Lane or St Aubyn's Road, where it is safer to get in.
On Friday and Saturday nights the Triangle is busy until late. Book your ride home before you sit down to eat. It takes one call to 020 8778 8888.
Crystal Palace Park and the National Sports Centre
The park is the reason many visitors come. It has the Victorian dinosaur sculptures, a maze, a boating lake, a skate park and the ruins of the palace terraces. The transmitter tower rises over it all.
The park is large and has gates on every side. Tell us which entrance you want.
- Crystal Palace Parade, at the top, for the terraces and the bus station
- Anerley Hill, for the station and the museum
- Thicket Road, at the Penge end, for the dinosaurs and the cafe
- Sydenham Gate on Crystal Palace Park Road, closest to Sydenham
The National Sports Centre sits in the middle, reached from Ledrington Road. Parents bring children for swimming, athletics and diving. If training finishes late, a booked car means nobody waits outside in the dark.
Concerts and festivals in the park close roads and draw big crowds. On those days, agree a pickup point a few streets away.
Crystal Palace and Gipsy Hill stations
Crystal Palace station is at the bottom of Anerley Hill, well below the Triangle. It has Overground and Southern trains. The walk up to Westow Hill takes 10 to 15 minutes and is steep the whole way.
Gipsy Hill station, on the western side, has the same problem in reverse. It lies at the foot of Gipsy Hill, and the shops are at the top.
We collect from both. At Crystal Palace station the driver waits on Crystal Palace Station Road by the entrance. At Gipsy Hill, the short approach off the main road is the usual spot.
Five boroughs and a patchwork of streets
Crystal Palace is unusual. Five London boroughs meet near the Triangle, which are Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham. Postcodes change within a street or two, from SE19 to SE20, SE26 and SE27.
That confuses delivery drivers and sat navs. It does not confuse us. Our drivers know that Belvedere Road, Fox Hill and Cintra Park are tight and steep, that Church Road is slow by the roundabout, and that South Norwood Hill is the way down towards Croydon.
Give us your full address and postcode, and we will find the right door.
Typical local journey times from the Triangle
| Destination | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Sydenham station | 6 to 10 minutes |
| Penge High Street | 6 to 10 minutes |
| West Norwood | 8 to 12 minutes |
| Dulwich Village | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Croydon town centre | 15 to 25 minutes |
| King's College Hospital | 20 to 30 minutes |
These are typical figures for a normal day. Church Road and Central Hill slow down in the evening peak.
Selhurst Park on match days
Selhurst Park is about ten minutes south of the Triangle. On match days the roads around Whitehorse Lane and Holmesdale Road are closed or crowded, and local parking is restricted.
Supporters from SE19 often book a car to drop them a few streets from the ground. After the match, allow time for the crowd to clear. A pickup on a side road away from the stadium works better than waiting at the gates.
Snow, ice and steep streets
When it snows, Crystal Palace gets it first and keeps it longest. The upper roads can turn icy while Sydenham below is merely wet. Our drivers know which hills are gritted and which to avoid. In bad weather, allow extra time and be ready to meet the car at the nearest main road if your street is impassable.
Hotels and visitors
Crystal Palace has hotels along Church Road, which makes it a base for people visiting family in Sydenham, Penge and Norwood. Guests often need evening transport back to their room.
Our hotel transfer taxi page explains how hotel pickups work, including what to do if a guest has no UK phone.
Family travel and school journeys
Families in SE19 use us for the morning run to schools on the hill and across in Dulwich and Sydenham. Our school run taxi page covers regular term time bookings.
For outings with five or six people, a 6 seater taxi is a good fit. Child seats are available if you ask when booking.
Trains and flights from SE19
For journeys into central London, see the Sydenham to Victoria Station taxi page. Trains run from Crystal Palace to Victoria, but with cases the walk down to the platforms is a trial.
For flights, the nearest major option is described on our minicab from Sydenham to Gatwick Airport page. From the Triangle, the car heads down South Norwood Hill and joins the main road at Croydon. If you are flying north, see the Luton Airport taxi from Sydenham page.
Areas next door
Down the hill to the east is Penge, on our Penge taxi page. To the south is Anerley, on the Anerley taxi page. West along Central Hill is Norwood, on the West Norwood taxi page.
Every district we serve is listed on the areas we cover page.

Crystal Palace taxi questions
How long does a taxi take to reach Crystal Palace from your office?
Our base is on Sydenham Road, a short drive up Westwood Hill. A car can often reach the Triangle within minutes, though evenings and weekends are busier. Book ahead for a fixed time.
Where is the best place to be picked up on the Triangle?
Tell us which venue you are at and which street it is on. Drivers usually stop on a side road just off the one way loop, and they will call you to confirm.
Can you collect me from Crystal Palace station and take me up the hill?
Yes. Short trips from the station to the top of the hill are among our most common jobs in SE19.
Which park entrance should I ask for?
It depends what you are visiting. Thicket Road is best for the dinosaurs and the cafe. The Parade is best for the terraces. Anerley Hill is nearest the station.
Can I get a taxi home late on a Saturday night?
Yes. We are open 24 hours. Book before you go out if you can, because Saturday nights are the busiest time.
Do you take people to Selhurst Park?
Yes. We drop a short walk from the ground, since roads close around the stadium on match days, and collect from an agreed side street afterwards.
Do you know the difference between SE19, SE20 and SE26 addresses here?
Yes. Postcodes change within a few streets around Crystal Palace. Give us the full address and we will come to the right place.
