Is a taxi worth it when trains go direct?
It is a fair thing to ask. Lower Sydenham station has direct trains to Charing Cross on the Hayes line, and in the daytime they are quick.
A car is the better choice in other circumstances. After 11pm, when trains are less frequent and you have a walk at the far end. When you are dressed for an evening out and it is raining. When someone in your party cannot manage steps. Or when you live at the top end of Sydenham, a long way from Lower Sydenham station.
For those trips, a minicab from Sydenham to the West End is door to door, and the fare is agreed before you set off.
The route into the West End
From Sydenham the car goes through Forest Hill and down to Peckham and Camberwell. At the Elephant and Castle the driver has a choice. One way crosses Westminster Bridge and passes Parliament Square and Whitehall. The other crosses Waterloo Bridge and comes down the Strand.
Waterloo Bridge is more common, since Whitehall is sometimes closed for events and marches.
Typical journey time
The typical journey time is 40 to 60 minutes. On a Saturday evening, traffic near the Aldwych and the Strand can add ten minutes. After midnight the return to Sydenham often takes about 30.
Road closures to watch for
Central London closes roads more than anywhere else in the city. The London Marathon, New Year's Eve, state occasions and demonstrations all affect the Strand, Whitehall and Trafalgar Square. If you are travelling on one of those days, tell us and we will plan a drop off point that is still open.
Where the driver sets down
Charing Cross has a forecourt on the Strand, used by black cabs. Private hire drivers normally stop on the Strand itself where allowed, or on a side street such as Craven Street or Villiers Street beside the station.
For Embankment Tube station and the river piers, Villiers Street is ideal because it runs downhill to both.
West End theatres, galleries and restaurants
Most of our passengers on this route are not catching a train at all. Charing Cross is the easiest landmark for a wide stretch of the West End.
- The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery on Trafalgar Square
- The London Coliseum on St Martin's Lane
- The Adelphi, Vaudeville and Savoy theatres along the Strand
- Covent Garden market and the Royal Opera House
- Leicester Square cinemas and Chinatown
If you give us the name of the venue, the driver will stop as near as traffic rules allow. Some streets in Covent Garden are closed to vehicles, so a short walk may remain.
Taxi from Charing Cross to Sydenham after a night out
The journey home is where this service matters most. Shows finish between 10pm and 10.45pm, and the pavements fill with people looking for a ride.
Private hire cars cannot be hailed in the street, which is the law in London. So book your taxi from Charing Cross to Sydenham before you go out. Tell us when you expect to be finished and the driver will be close by.
You will get a call when the car is in position. Pick a quiet meeting point away from the theatre doors. Craven Street, John Adam Street and Northumberland Avenue all work well. If dinner overruns, phone 020 8778 8888 and we will push the time back.
Do not confuse the station with the hospital
Here is a tip that saves real trouble. Charing Cross Hospital is not near Charing Cross Station. The hospital is in Hammersmith, about 5 miles to the west, on Fulham Palace Road.
If you have an appointment there, say Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith when you book. We will quote for that address and take a different route altogether.
The river, the Embankment and Whitehall
Charing Cross is also the nearest station to a stretch of the Thames that draws a lot of visitors. Embankment Pier, at the foot of Villiers Street, is a boarding point for river boats to Greenwich and the Tower.
Government offices line Whitehall, a few minutes to the south. People attending meetings or interviews there often book a morning car, because arriving flustered from a crowded train is not the start they want.
Hotels are another common reason. The Savoy and several large hotels stand on the Strand and Northumberland Avenue. If you are going to a wedding reception or a formal dinner at one of them, give us the hotel name and we will drop you at the entrance.
Christmas, sales and busy seasons
December is the busiest month on this route. Christmas lights, pantomimes, office parties and shopping all pull people into the West End at once, and roads around Trafalgar Square slow to a crawl in the early evening.
Our advice is simple. Book early in the week, allow an extra 15 minutes on the way in, and choose a pickup point for the way home that is a street or two back from the main roads. The driver reaches you sooner, and you get away faster.
Trains from Charing Cross
For those who are travelling by rail, Southeastern runs services from Charing Cross to Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, Ashford, Canterbury and Dover. Platforms are close to the entrance, so 15 minutes before departure is plenty.
Heading to the Kent coast with children and beach gear? An estate or a 7 seater taxi will carry the lot.
Vehicles for groups and celebrations
Birthday dinners, anniversary shows and work parties usually involve more than four people. One MPV keeps the group together, and it costs less than two saloons. Our 6 seater taxi is the most requested vehicle for theatre nights.
Executive cars are available for special occasions. Child seats and wheelchair accessible vehicles can be requested when booking.
Fares, charges and payment
We quote your fare before the trip. Charing Cross is well inside the Congestion Charge zone, which applies on weekdays and for part of the day at weekends. Evening journeys usually fall outside charging hours.
Ask us to confirm whether the charge is part of your quote. Payment can be made by card or cash.

Charing Cross taxi FAQs
How long does it take to get from Sydenham to Charing Cross by taxi?
Typically 40 to 60 minutes. Evening traffic around the Strand and the Aldwych is the main factor. Late at night the trip is quicker.
How far is Charing Cross from Sydenham?
Around 8 miles by road, crossing the river at Waterloo Bridge or Westminster Bridge.
Can I get a taxi home from the theatre?
Yes. Book before you go, tell us when the show finishes and the driver will be waiting nearby. You agree the meeting point by phone.
Can I hail one of your cars in the West End?
No. Private hire cars must be booked in advance through the office. That is a legal requirement in London and it keeps a record of every journey.

It depends on your travel time. The charge does not usually apply late in the evening. Ask when you book and we will confirm.
