Do you need a taxi when trains run to Victoria?
Let us be straight about it. Southern trains run from Sydenham to Victoria by way of Crystal Palace, and Sydenham Hill has trains to Victoria too. If you are travelling light in the daytime, the train is a perfectly good choice.
So when does a cab make sense? More often than you might think.
- When you have cases for a coach holiday or a cruise connection
- When your coach leaves at 6am, before the trains are useful
- When you are coming home after 11pm from the theatre
- When you have young children, or walking is difficult
- When the line is closed for weekend engineering work
In those cases, a car from your door to the station entrance takes the strain out of the day.
Victoria Coach Station is not the railway station
This catches people out every week. Victoria Coach Station is on Buckingham Palace Road, about a third of a mile south west of the trains. Departures leave from the main building. Arrivals come into a separate building on Elizabeth Street.
A minicab to Victoria Coach Station from Sydenham will drop you at the departures entrance. Coaches close their doors a few minutes before leaving, and operators ask you to be there early, so we normally plan to arrive 30 minutes ahead.
Tell us clearly whether you want rail or coach when you book. It changes where the driver stops.
Sydenham to Victoria by road
The route goes over the hill and through Dulwich. From Sydenham the car takes the South Circular past Dulwich Common, turns north through Herne Hill and Brixton and follows Stockwell Road to Vauxhall. It then crosses Vauxhall Bridge and runs up Vauxhall Bridge Road to the station.
Typical time and distance
It is about 7 miles. The typical journey time is 35 to 55 minutes. Brixton is the usual pinch point, especially on Saturday afternoons, and Vauxhall Cross can be slow at 5.30pm.
Early coaches and late returns
Before 6am the roads are clear and 30 minutes is realistic. For a late night return from Victoria to Sydenham the timing is similar, which is a good deal quicker than the night bus.
Setting down at the railway station
The front of Victoria Station faces a bus station on Terminus Place, and stopping there is tightly controlled. Private hire drivers usually set down on Wilton Road at the east side or on Buckingham Palace Road at the west side.
Wilton Road is nearer to platforms 1 to 8, which serve Kent. Buckingham Palace Road is nearer to the Gatwick Express and Brighton line platforms. Mention your train and we will stop on the correct side.
The Gatwick Express question
The Gatwick Express runs from Victoria to the airport in about half an hour. From Sydenham, though, travelling north to Victoria in order to go south again makes little sense. A minicab from Sydenham to Gatwick Airport goes straight down the A23 and takes about the same time as the taxi to Victoria alone would.
Taxi from Victoria to Sydenham at night
Victoria is theatre country. The Apollo Victoria and the Victoria Palace Theatre are both beside the station, and shows finish at around 10.15pm to 10.30pm. Thousands of people pour onto the street at once.
Book your taxi from Victoria to Sydenham before the show. Give us the finishing time, and your driver will be close by when you come out. You agree a meeting point by phone, usually on Wilton Road, away from the crowd.
The same applies to coach arrivals late in the evening. Give us the coach number and due time, and call 020 8778 8888 if it is running behind.
Trains from Victoria and who uses them
Victoria is really two stations under one roof. The eastern side serves Kent, with Southeastern trains to Bromley South, the Medway towns, Canterbury and Dover. The western side serves Sussex, with Southern trains to Brighton, Eastbourne and the coast.
People from Sydenham use it most for days out and weekends away. Brighton on a sunny Saturday is the classic. A morning cab to the station and an evening cab home turns a long day into an easy one, especially if you have had a drink with dinner.
Belgravia, Pimlico and medical appointments
A fair number of bookings on this route have nothing to do with travel. Private clinics and consulting rooms are spread through Belgravia and Pimlico, and patients often prefer a car when they are anxious or recovering.
We can wait and bring you back if the appointment is short. Ask for a wait and return price when you call. For longer appointments, book a second car for a set time and ring us if you finish early.
What else is near Victoria
People also book this trip for Westminster Cathedral, the passport office near the station, the shops on Victoria Street and the offices around Cardinal Place. Buckingham Palace is a ten minute walk. If one of these is your real destination, give us the address and we will drop you there.
Choosing your vehicle
Coach holidays often involve a group. A saloon takes up to four with two large cases. An estate adds luggage room. For bigger parties, book a 6 seater taxi or ask about the 8 seater minibus.
Visitors staying in one of the many hotels around Belgrave Road can use our hotel transfer taxi service in either direction.
Fares and the Congestion Charge
Your fare is quoted before you travel. Victoria Station sits on the edge of the Congestion Charge zone, and Vauxhall Bridge Road forms part of the boundary. Depending on the exact drop off point and time of day, the charge may or may not apply. Ask us when we quote.
Payment is by card or cash.
Booking and what we need from you
Ring 020 8778 8888 or fill in the form at the top of this page. Tell us the pickup address, the time, how many passengers and bags, and whether you are going to the railway station or the coach station.
For returns, add the time you expect to be ready and a mobile number. If you are on a coach, the service number helps us check how it is running.
